Grand Garden Route Forest Birding Tour



The Garden Route along South Africa's south coast with its wild seas and untamed forests have always drawn people like a magnet. Forest and shore birds are what this tour aims at. You will get to walk in glorious tranquil forests and on pristine beaches while observing beautiful birds.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Day 1 Cape Town - De Hoop Nature Reserve

We meet you at your lodge in Cape Town. After getting to know each other we will head out for the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens and Penguin Colony in Betty's Bay. Thereafter we will take a route less travelled to the De Hoop Nature Reserve to see their colony of vultures and a paradise for seasonal whale watching.

DAY 2 De Hoop Nature Reserve - Bontebok National Park

After breakfast we depart for Bontebok National Park where we will relax in comfortable log cabins after taking a walk along the river. Tonight we will share stories under the stars around the fire.

DAY 3  Bontebok National Park - Garden Route National Park (Ebb and Flow)

Today we will break in to the Garden Route proper starting at Wilderness. This will be our first sighting of the hanging forests.

DAY 4  Garden Route National Park (Ebb and Flow) - Garden Route National Park (Natures Valley)

We are now in the heart of the Garden Route with its greenery and lakes. Keep your eyes peeled as anything is possible in this area.

DAY 5 Garden Route National Park (Natures Valley) - Garden Route National Park (Storms River)

We drive through the picturesque town of Knysna, the on to Plettenberg Bay before dropping down to Nature's Valley which is simply stunning. It lies on a river, has a stunning beach and is the end of the legendary Otter Trail. If you are feeling strong we can walk along the beach to the mouth of the Sout River

DAY 6 Garden Route National Park (Storms River) - Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve

This is another unexpected gem. Here you will find yourself at the mouth of another river with a suspension bridge traversing it. There are hikes up the mountain or a walk to a waterfall. It is quiet and tranquil and if you are lucky little Bush-buck will walk through camp. There is a good restaurant and a well stocked shop.

DAY 7 Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve- Cape Town

This one of those well hidden gems where we can take walks in forests close to Redwood Sequoias trees and find secluded bird hides. Then for the long drive back to Cape Town where you will be dropped off at your guest house.
